HRC Closures

THE FIGHT TO SAVE LOWER COMPTON HOUSEHOLD RECYCLING CENTRE

Wiltshire Council plans to close 2 of it’s HRCs, both owned and operated by Hills Waste Solutions with no public consultation whatsoever.

Now a Stay of Execution?

Following a terrific local backlash, Wiltshire Council has announced it will keep Lower Compton HRC open after August 2026 but only on a 12 month rolling contract, or until a replacement HRC near Royal Wootton Bassett has been established. Such a site however has not even been identified or costed and indeed may never be built. The long term threat to Lower Compton HRC remains.

What are the consequences of closure?

Quite a lot, none of them good:

  • Cherhill parish residents, in fact everyone  from the area, will find it far more difficult and expensive to recycle. Having to travel  to HRCs at Devizes, Melksham or Marlborough.
  • Increased wear and tear of our local roads with additional repair and maintenance.
  • Increased traffic also would result in increased emissions.
  • Inevitably this would all lead to increased fly-tipping of waste.
  • In any event Wiltshire Council plans to implement a booking system for all it’s HRCs. This will only result in delays, further encouragement of fly-tipping and increased costs to the Council.

What can we do?

If you oppose these appalling plans please contact at least 2 of the Wiltshire Councillors who thought all this was a good idea:

Cllr Ian Thorn, Leader Wiltshire Councilian.thorn@wiltshire.gov.uk
Cllr Paul Sample, Cabinet Member for Waste, Climate and Environmentpaul.sample@wiltshire.gov.uk
