Cherhill White Horse Chalking

Help Re-chalk the Cherhill White Horse – Volunteers Needed

Scheduled: 23 May 2026 - 10:00 to 15:00

The iconic Cherhill White Horse is due to be re-chalked, and we’re inviting volunteers from the local community and beyond to be part of this special effort to take care of one of Wiltshire’s most recognisable landmarks.

Re-chalking helps keep the White Horse visible, protected, and true to its historic form. It’s a hands‑on way to contribute to the preservation of local heritage—and a rewarding day spent outdoors with others who care about this remarkable site.

Why get involved?

  • Help preserve an important historic landmark
  • Take part in a long‑standing local tradition
  • Meet new people and support community heritage
  • Enjoy fresh air and beautiful views from the downs

No previous experience is required—just a willingness to lend a hand and get involved.

What to expect

Volunteers will assist with carefully applying fresh chalk to restore the White Horse’s bright appearance. Guidance will be provided on the day, and tasks will be suitable for a range of abilities.

Important information for volunteers:

  • Please bring your own gloves to protect your hands while working with chalk.
  • The White Horse is located on very steep ground. Sturdy footwear with strong ankle support is highly recommended for safety and comfort.
  • Volunteers are asked to bring their own tools, if possible, e.g.:
    • Hand forks and trowels for weeding
    • Rakes and shovels for spreading new chalk
  • As this is an outdoor activity, weather conditions may vary, so appropriate clothing is advised.
